2020 is here with an all new way of shopping! In the past, it’s been about getting the “new” style and trying to have an individual look, where no one can get the same look as you. As the sustainability movement has become more and more prevalent in the fashion industry, the consumer has really picked up on that. They not only shop at more sustainable brands, but they will also refuse to shop at retail stores that don’t have a sustainable options.

Around 10 years ago, the newest form of shopping was introduced by a retailer called Rent the Runway. The rental model has changed the shopping platform for millennials and Gen Z as it connects to the sustainability movement perfectly. Why buy new clothes when you can rent fresh looks for a fraction of the price? Many other rental platforms have popped up since Rent the Runway started, such as American Eagle rental and Express rental. Being able to rent clothes has allowed for a new type of shopping because people want to have that feeling of wearing new clothes, but they also are most likely to only wear it once and they have it hidden in the back of their closet. Rentals allow less closet space to be taken up with a few new outfits a month.

Another shopping option is resale on outlets like Poshmark and Tradesy. These apps have helped recycle old clothes by making them new to someone else. The clothes are sold at lower prices and are so much better than buying new products because you know exactly what to expect from the pictures that are shown. Since they are not on the models used by brands, the products sold on these platforms are not altered in any way to fit a certain way or make it look more attractive for people to buy. This is the new way to shop, the reusing, repurposing and recycling!
